The Duchess Quest (Jordinia #1) by C.K. Brooke
Publication Date: October 3, 2014
Dainy doesn’t know that she is the lost Duchess of Jordinia, believed to have been assassinated fifteen years ago. Nor does she know that her uncle has implemented an illegal contest to seek her, offering her marriage hand as the reward! Though at odds, three clashing rivals – including a noble giant, a forest dweller and a thieving rake – voyage together by woodland, prairie and sea to recover the lost royal, notwithstanding the assassins and spies at their tail. Soon, young Dainy is swept into a comically complex romantic quadrangle as each suitor competes to capture her heart. Charmingly romantic and bursting with political intrigue, startling twists and vivid characters, readers of romance and fantasy alike will adore this original yet timeless tale of swashbuckling adventure and unlikely love.

This book was so full of romance, danger, and adventure that it was over before I realized it. Duchess Eludaine is the last living heir of the former Emperor and Empress of Jordiana. Fifteen years before they were executed with all of their children. Well, almost all of their children. One managed to escape – Duchess Eludaine. Many years later Eludaine’s uncle issues a challenge stating that any man who finds his niece will win her hand in marriage as well as a purse of money. This leads two men to battle for her hand while the current rulers of Jordiana are trying to hunt her down to kill her. This seems pretty straight forward but please know that not everyone is who the appear to be.
This was a fast read but it kept me engrossed the entire time. There were so many twists, turns, and surprises that this kept my interest. The ending of this story did not tie everything up in a nice bow, it left it open for the next book in the series. The only slight downfall I can see with people getting into this story is how many POVs there are. I’ll be honest – there are a lot of POVs. In the beginning it felt like a lot, but after I got into the story it didn’t bother me as much.
The romance was well plotted and it felt believable. I could feel the tension and the struggles of everyone involved. The characters felt well developed and thought out. Not only is Eludaine’s character wonderfully complex, the men that join on the quest are as well. Mac is the sweet, innocent woodsman; Bos is the gentle giant that still has loyalty to the former Emperor; and Jon, the questionably charming thief with a seedy background. But I won’t spoil for you who she picks in the end. You must read to find out.
I feel I can’t say too much more without giving a lot of this book away. I’m also afraid I can’t say enough good things about this story. I wasn’t sure I would like a medieval or fantasy romance but I did enjoy this a lot. I would highly recommend to everyone, that’s why I gave it 3.5 stars.
