Review: Shades of Earth (Across the Universe #3)

Shades of Earth (Across the Universe, #3)

What in tarnation happened to this series? This was not the story or ending I was hoping for. I remember rating this 4.5 stars but I also remember screaming as the series came to a conclusion.

Short recap: Amy and Elder figured out that the planet they are meant to land on many, many years in the future is actually inhabited now. By people from their own ship that landed several years before. But things are not what they seem and the reason for the passengers on board is not as simple as “starting a new civilization”.

Let it be known that every single person within this story will go through some battle or fight and see bloodshed before the story finishes. Revis is not afraid to make the characters and reader go through a hard time. When the overall plot and reason for Godspeed‘s existence is revealed, I let out a gasp. I should have seen it coming but I was too caught up in the story. Once the ship landed on the planet, I felt there were some scenes that were over the top and unnecessary. They felt like a shock factor type thing but the story could have done without those. I didn’t completely jive with everything that happened on the planet, but regardless the ending was done with a nice neat bow so I can’t complain too much, right?

The characters really did continue to grow as this book continued. Amy finally calmed down a bit while Elder became even more stalker and obsessed with Amy. Not creepy at all, right? *eye roll here* The things these two characters get themselves into and the things that happen to them feel too much like a coincidence and stuff that happens to keep the plot moving. In other words – not very believable and too good to be true. I can happily say that the romance budding between these two is (thankfully) kept as a story line in the back and not waved in the reader’s face the entire time.

I know this is short and sweet but I have been trying really hard lately to not give too much away in my reviews. I may have said some negative things in this review, but overall I did like the series. What reader isn’t going to find things that bother them about a story? I have yet to find one. If you have not read this series or have been on the fence about starting it, I recommend you give it a try.
