Review: Night of Cake & Puppets

Night of Cake & Puppets (Daughter of Smoke & Bone, #2.5)

This is a quick companion novel of Mik and Zuzana’s first date. Prepare yourself for this sweet and absolutely adorable short story.

The night Zuzana and Mik had their first date was only hinted at in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series so Laini Taylor brought it to life for her wonderful readers. This was a delightful tale of just how much Mik affected Zuzana’s normally calm composure. Little does Zuzana know, Mik feels the same way about her. They are both drawn to each other and their paths cross many, many times. Zuzana is a puppet maker in the theater where Mik plays the violin. Both keep waiting for the other to make a move. Zuzana wants to know why Mik won’t talk to her and Mik wants to know why Zuzana never turns her famous charm on him.

Sure, this story came out years ago but it has been brought back to life thanks to a special illustrated edition. Plus, the audio is available and it is masterfully done. It is told from dual POVs and the audio voices are magical. The narrators were spot on with their rendition of Zuzana and Mik. I could feel the emotion from both characters as they stumbled through the night when they finally talk to one another. It was a night full of magic and sweetness, like a chocolate cake.

Whether you read the new illustrated edition or listen to the audio, treat yourself to the sweetest story of how two people found each other in a magical way.
