About the Author:
C.V. Wyk is the author of BLOOD AND SAND, debuting from Tor Teen January 16, 2018. Born and raised in Los Angeles, CA, Wyk has lived in five states in the continental US (and hopes to add a few international locales to that list). Prone to wanderlust and getting lost, Wyk likes to explore local hiking trails, mountain ranges, dark caves where nefarious mythical creatures undoubtedly reside, and libraries. She currently lives in Maryland with a precocious mini poodle and a demanding guinea pig. In her not-so-spare time, she enjoys playing MMORPGs, kayaking, coding, staring listlessly at blank walls, and nursing a totally healthy coffee addiction.

The action-packed tale of a 17-year-old warrior princess and a handsome gladiator who dared take on the Roman Republic–and gave rise to the legend of Spartacus….
Roma Victor. The Republic of Rome is on a relentless march to build an empire–an empire built on the backs of the conquered, brought back to Rome as slaves.
Attia was once destined to rule as the queen and swordmaiden of Thrace, the greatest warrior kingdom the world had seen since Sparta. Now she is a slave, given to Xanthus, the Champion of Rome, as a sign of his master’s favor. Enslaved as a child, Xanthus is the preeminent gladiator of his generation.
Against all odds, Attia and Xanthus form a tentative bond. A bond that will spark a rebellion. A rebellion that threatens to bring the Roman Republic to its end–and gives rise to the legend of Spartacus….
I am going to give another down and dirty review and really try not to give anything away. Here is the biggest thing you need to know about this book:
YOU NEED THIS BOOK.
This story is going to be hard for me to review because it was beyond words amazing. I loved everything about this story – the historical retelling, the characters, the heartbreak, the slow burn romance… all of it.
Wyk started the action rolling in the first chapter and it never stopped. I truly took my time reading this because I just did not want it to end. I wanted to stay in this world with Attia and Xanthus forever. Attia was the perfect amount of baddass, hardcore, and fragile (she had just lost her freedom after all). To read her character arc and watch her remember just who she was and what she would fight for was brilliant. Xanthus was just as spectacular. He was one of the most complex characters I have read in a while. I wanted to know everything about him. Let’s not forget Xanthus’ fellow fighters/gladiators! Those guys were a HOOT! They had me rolling with laughter the entire time! I would be lying if I said I didn’t want to be friends with them in real life.
This entire story, from start to finish, had me captivated. This was the perfect story I didn’t know I needed to read. I will never stop pushing this on people so be prepared for me to always recommend this. Also, the ending made me cry like a hungry angry baby. TEARS! I already talk to Wyk about it and thanked her for writing such a powerful story. I screamed when it was over because I wanted more. I need book 2 NOW! Please add this to your TBR if you haven’t already!
