The water was like ink in the fading light, and Jade could see nothing but the dark expanse beneath her. She hoped the Myr female hadn’t been badly hurt and had retreated to safety, despite the bindings around her wrists and ankles. Jade stood cautiously, wary of the rocking of the boat but driven to return to the relative safety of the Traveller Base before the darkness was complete. She stretched out her wings, about to leap into the sky, when a hiss behind her made her spin around.
The Myr female loomed next to the boat; her head and shoulders were above the water line. Her round eyes stared without blinking, and her sharp teeth were bared in a snarl.
“Why did you help me?” she rasped. The last of the light reflected off her wet scales, making her glitter like a statue inlaid with silver.
Jade stared. Wasn’t it obvious? “They were going to hurt you,” Jade said.
“Your kind are violent and cruel,” the female replied. “You kill because you can.”
“We’re not all like that,” Jade insisted.
The female regarded her for a moment without saying anything.
“Are you all right?” Jade broke the silence. “Do you need me to cut the bonds free? I have a knife.”
“And I have many knives.” The Myr ran a tongue over her dagger-like teeth before holding up her hands to show they were already freed.
“Good,” Jade said, spreading her wings again. “Well, then I shall return to—“
“You helped me,” the female said, cocking her head to one side, puzzled. “I am in your debt.”
“I am Alyss.” The female threw something, sending it soaring in an arc towards Jade, who caught it.
“If you ever need anything, show this to any of my people and they will help you,” Alyss said. Jade turned the polished shell over in her hand as she looked at it. The shell was oval-shaped and curved like a shallow bowl. The exterior surface was rough to the touch and grey-blue in colour. Inside, the shell was pink and smooth, except where small ridges had been carved into an asymmetrical pattern.
“What is—” Jade started, but when she looked to where Alyss had been a moment ago, there were only faint ripples on the surface. She stared, but there was no other sign of her. Jade fixed the shell to her neck chain, and it clinked against her other charms. Then she launched herself in the air to hurry back to the base.
