Julian grabbed the donuts and pointed the remote at the TV, turning Parks and Recreation back on. “Can we start from the beginning? I’ve never watched this show.”

“What?” Amalie gaped at him. “Never?”

He shook his head and bit into a donut. “Never.”

“Then yes, we can totally watch from the beginning.”

They sat side by side, shoulder to shoulder, thigh to thigh as hilarity unfolded onscreen. But at some point, Amalie’s eyes grew heavy, and before she knew it, she was startled awake by the feel of a gently calloused hand running up her arm.

When she opened her eyes, Julian stared back at her, his beautiful face mere inches from her own. She was nestled against his side, held against his body in an even more intimate way than before. The backs of his fingers played along her jawbone, and she couldn’t help but inhale the scent of his cologne that lingered on his wrists.

She had to be dreaming.

But then Julian leaned forward and pressed a delicate kiss to her cheek. The warmth of his lips seared her skin and heated her from within. She closed her eyes, hardly able to think. If she just turned her head, their mouths would meet, and it would be over. Any restraint she’d had before would be no more than a memory.

Her heart pounded like a drum as desire stirred through her like a living thing. She ran her hand up his arm and twisted her fingers in the fabric of his shirt.

Julian pulled back, staring her in the eyes again. “It’s almost midnight, princess. I couldn’t let Valentine’s Day pass without you getting a kiss. Even if it was from a jerk like me.”

The corner of his mouth curled, and she tried desperately to mirror the action, her mind swirling back to the reality that this night wasn’t going to go any further, which was for the best. She knew that, even if her body hated her for it.

Julian slipped from her grasp, grabbed his tie, and slipped on his shoes. He snatched one last donut, then Amalie walked him to the door. Even still she ached to feel him against her one more time, which seemed wild now that she was waking up.

“See you tomorrow, princess,” he said, “and Happy Valentine’s Day.” He leaned forward in the doorway, kissing her on top of her head. “Don’t say I never gave you anything.” He winked and gestured with his donut, and then he was gone.

Amalie pressed a hand to her chest to steady her fluttering heart, thinking he’d given her more than he knew, and it terrified her.

He dipped his head as he pocketed the undies. “I’m so sleepy.” Amalie pinched her lips together at the sight of her bright red thong sticking out of his pocket. She made herself remember the reason for all of this, the reason she was even putting up with this mess. She knew Julian was drunk, but there was something she had to ask. “Hey, how badly do you want to get to the US Open?” She edged closer to him, hands wringing. He propped a hand on the back of the couch, his eyes even heavier lidded than before. “I…I want it more than anything, but it’s impossible,” he slurred. “What if I can get you there? What if I can make it happen?” She cocked her head to the side, realizing she was quickly losing him. He was minutes from passing out. Again. “You can’t. You live in this tiny, itsy bitsy,” he held his pointer finger and thumb together, “house or hotel or whatever this place is. Tennis is expensive, more than I can afford.” He shuffled to the front of the couch. “But what if I could? What would you be willing to do for me?” She regretted the words instantly. A sexy smirk tilted his lips and then his hands went to the button on his jeans, his thumb tracing that sexy trail of hair right above it. “Are you propositioning me?” Amalie forced herself to look away. “Oh, no you don’t,” she said while blindly smacking at his hand, ignoring that little bit of drool pooling at the corner of her mouth from his impromptu show. “You are not about to completely undress here.” Suddenly her hand smacked at emptiness and she turned to see that Julian had fallen onto the couch haphazardly, one hand still on his fly. He was out cold. She growled in aggravation as she dug her underwear from his jeans, careful to keep her eyes averted even though those traitors wanted to look their fill. After rearranging him as best she could, she looked down at his unconscious form, still feeling a little breathless. She’d found out what she needed to know. Julian could be bought. “You don’t know it yet, “but you’re going to save me from a life I don’t want, Julian Smoke.” She stepped out of the pool house into the cool night air and wasted no time seeking out her father.

ATTRACTION Blog Tour – Excerpt and Giveaway

Today we have the blog tour for Attraction by Ruby Porter! Check out this fantastic new women’s fiction and be sure to grab your copy today!

Title: Attraction

Author: Ruby Porter

Genre: Women’s Fiction

About Attraction:

The present reckons with the past in Attraction, Ruby Porter’s atmospheric debut novel. Three women are on a road trip, navigating the motorways of the North Island, their relationships with one another and New Zealand’s colonial history. Our narrator doesn’t know where she stands with Ilana, her not-quite girlfriend. She has a complex history with her best friend, Ashi. She’s haunted by the memory of her emotionally abusive ex-boyfriend. And her period’s now weeks late. Attraction is a meditative novel of connection, inheritance and the stories we tell ourselves. In lyrical fragments, Porter explores what it means to be and to belong, to create and to destroy. ‘[Porter’s] writing has the intensity of Sally Rooney, the rawness of Andrew McGahan’s Praise and 1988 but is also distinctly original…[A]n utterly amazing debut.’ Jon Page

EXCERPT

That kind of drowning feeling. The air is all around your face, if you could only breathe it. Ilana said, —The first breath you take again always hurts.

She is an experienced drowner and I am just starting out.

—This wave, she says. Yelling, —Come, no, here by me.

She gets it right. Knows exactly where to stand for the wave to pick her up and throw her. Carry her. She can surf some right back to the shallows. I keep getting hurled below. See the Gisborne sun rippling through all that green. And I’m not sure whether I’ve opened my eyes underwater, or if I never had a chance to shut them.

Ilana grabs my arm but I duck when the wave comes.

Then she tells me about the first time, when she was seven.

Her mum’s dinghy capsized and whenever she came up for breath she hit the hull instead. She says the sea was holding her down, not ready to let her go. And then it turned and it pushed her up, shot her face first, full of air. She’s the one who keeps pulling me up today.

When I look at her, I think: the ocean will never again be so in place. It shudders and slurps and turns—no two molecules will be together for long. No two molecules will find each other again. Or at least, it’s unlikely.

Then Ashi joins us.

Ashi doesn’t catch as many waves as Ilana, but she catches some. I keep surfacing to see them tumbling into the spray together. Sometimes, Ilana puts her hand on Ashi’s arm as they wade back out deep.

—What is it? Ilana says to me.

Water is furling itself on the horizon, creeping forward.

—Stay here, she says. —It’s a big one.

I’m sucked in before it’s even broken. This time I can hardly see. The ocean floor has been tossed into the wave—I blend with the sand and the seaweed and the dappled sun. Then I feel the break, and know I’m being pushed deeper.

For me it isn’t slowed down, like Ilana said, but sped up. A flash of light, greeny brown, something above the surface. The whir. The spin. The sea gasping, in and out, one giant lung that expands and compresses. When you’re beneath it, the ocean is the only thing that breathes.

“A heartfelt story that will make you laugh and swoon! The perfect feel-good read!” –Laura Kaye, NYT Bestselling Author “A seaside reunion story that will have you believing that love heals heartbreak and truly transcends time.” ~ Christi Barth, USA Today bestselling author

Exclusive Excerpt:

He was trying to tease her. And dammit, it was working. It wasn’t fair. Wren had admitted her attraction and Smith was using it against her. It was time to turn the tables. They put the finishing touches on the last wall, then turned to face each other. “You’ve got a little paint.” Smith pointed to a small white dot on her T-shirt that she already knew was there. “Well, you’ve got a lot of paint.” Wren swiped her still wet brush across his broad chest. His eyelids stretched wide. “Did you really just do that?” She nodded. “Uh huh. And guess what? I’m going to do it again.” Wren swung the brush in the opposite direction, drawing a giant white X across his black T-shirt. Smith’s jaw dropped as he stared at his chest. “This is one of my favorite shirts.” Oops. That might have been a mistake. Nervous laughter bubbled up her throat. “Sorry?” He lifted his head to meet her gaze. “Oh, it’s on now.” With a devilish glint in his eyes, he bent and scooped a handful of paint from the tray, then hurled it at her. It splattered her T-shirt and leggings. “Aaah!” Wren squealed, then ran across the tarp and ducked behind the covered furniture in the center of the room. “You think you can hide from me?” Smith laughed as he stalked toward her. “Um…maybe?” she giggled, crouched behind the dresser. He loomed over her, his hand filled with another pool of white paint. “Uh uh. You started this war, you’ve got to fight in it.” Wren stood, wearing her best sweet-and-innocent smile, the one she used when facing a particularly harsh judge in court. “Truce?” she asked, her right hand tucked behind her back. His lids narrowed. “Give me one reason why I shouldn’t dump this on your head?” “Because it would be really hard to wash out.” Smith exhaled. “That’s fair.” He slapped the paint on the tarp, then wiped his hand on the only dry spot left on his T-shirt. Shaking her head, Wren clucked her tongue. “It isn’t smart to disarm yourself before your opponent does.” Rising on tiptoes, she pulled out the paintbrush she’d kept hidden behind her back and wiped it across his forehead. Surprise flashed in his eyes. “You fight dirty.” She shrugged. “I am a lawyer.” “I’ll show you dirty.” In one smooth movement, Smith hoisted her up in his arms, and deposited her on the dresser top. Spreading her knees wide, he wedged himself between her legs and leaned in so far, she was nearly lying flat, propped on her elbows. A mischievous smile played on his lips. “That wasn’t very nice.” “But it was funny.” Smith’s eyes sparkled. “True, but you still deserve to be punished. What should your punishment be?” His hard length pressed against her. It was hot and hard and made her insides coil with need. Wren swallowed. “It’s never a good idea to ask the accused to set their own punishment. They always go too light. I’ll leave it to you to decide.” Kiss me. Hard and rough. Then rip off my clothes and do whatever you want. “Hmm, what do you deserve?” His gaze bore into her. Her breath raged as electric energy sparked between them. Smith’s own fierce desire was written on his face. So what was he waiting for? All he had to do was dip his mouth to hers, then do all the things he’d promised last night. Finally, his lips curled at the ends. “I’ve got it. But you’re not going to like it.” Wren smirked. “Try me.”

EXCERPT

JEREMY

She’s fucking with me again and trying to make me squirm. She’s using confrontation as an intimidation mechanism, and I feel like she’s testing me to see if I’ll forcibly deny that I was checking her out or own up to my automatic masculine tendencies.

I feel like if I’m going to have any chance of getting her number—hell, even her name at this point—I should choose option B.

I look her square in the face and give her a good, confident smile. “Actually, I did.”

Looking at her eyes, I notice the sinister quality is fleeing and being replaced with slight surprise and a hint of satisfaction. “Hmm. A guy who admits he was checking out the goods. I like that.”

“Well, I didn’t figure you’d be wearing those jeans if you didn’t want people taking a peek.” I decide to go for a little teasing of my own. “And as long as I’m being honest, you know what else I checked out?”

She looks at me just like I thought she would. Like she knows I’m going to say her boobs. Or rack. Or tits. Or whatever other off-color term you could use to describe breasts. The smile leaves her face, and she gives me a look of disappointment. I admire that even though she is let down, she still locks eyes with me, awaiting my response. It makes me wonder if she’s had this exact same conversation countless times before. She gave me a little honesty, and she thinks I’m about to take advantage of that vulnerability.

How the fuck can I tell all of this about her just by looking at her face?

She leans into the bar and gets closer to my face. At the V of her shirt, the fabric loses connection with her skin, and if I were looking in that direction, I’d probably be able to get a great view of what was hidden underneath. But my eyes do not leave hers. “Yeah, what’s that, stud?” she says in a monotone but enunciates the d in the word stud, nearly making it its own syllable. She’s indicating that I need to choose my next words wisely.

I wait before I answer and stare at her for a few seconds. She looks so sad, like she wanted me to be different. There was a small glimmer of hope in her face before, and now it’s been extinguished.

I want to reignite it.

Here goes nothing.

“Your eyes,” I finally say. And, as I assumed, that takes her by surprise. But her reaction is hardly noticeable. I only see the minor adjustment of her face. Her eyes widen ever so slightly, and there is just the tiniest bit of a grin on the left side of her lips. But the best part is that I see the hope again.

Genre: Epic Fantasy

Illustrator: Gabriela Dea Julia

Typography by Sylvia Frost from The Book Brander Boutique

Release Date: 1st of December

About The Cursed Crown:

My lips hitch up an inch as the hulking, slender man bends down to whisper in my ear. “A divided kingdom without a leader is weak. You will fall. You will fail. You will all die without my kindness, little girl.” He expects me to falter, shiver, and drop my gaze to the ground like the flock of gentry buzzing around him. My eyes widen in feigned dismay. “Kindness? Why did no one think to tell me you had any?” I have to allow him that one concession: Rydekar is fun to tease. He doesn’t even smile. I don’t think anyone has taunted him. “I have none. You will beg nonetheless.” I just may, in his dreams. And in my nightmares. No one was ever born less suited to ruling than Rissa, the thorn of the seelie realm—a half-fae so wild she’s spent the better part of a hundred years in the woods. For all her flaws, she’s the last of the high court bloodline, and the southern king seems to think that’s reason enough to slap a crown on her feathered head. He needs her to unify the seelie forces. She needs him to forget about that nonsense. In an effort to aid her people without condemning herself to a lifetime of misery, she sets off on a journey to find the one person with a stronger claim to the throne than hers: the cursed prince. Sealed in the mountains of the Wilderness, under many spells, the heir of the first seelie queen is the only royal strong enough to protect the fae lands from their immortal invaders. Surviving the untamed tribes and awakening a thousand-year-old prince seem a lot easier than ruling an entire kingdom where everyone hates her very nature. And her choices won’t come without consequences.

Exclusive Excerpt:

Long have I heard tales of the cursed prince. I’ve seen dozens of paintings and statues of his effigy. None prepared me for him. Tharsen is said to be beautiful, when he is exquisite. They tell us of his luminous aura, when it’s brighter than that of a burning star. He is beyond gods and monsters, beyond fae and man. I’ve never felt so strong a draw to anyone—anyone at all. It’s blinding and painful, claiming a piece of me. Capturing my mind. We’re kin, he and I. I am the daughter of his brother’s great-great-great-great-grandchild, I think. Yet I feel like I am an insignificant sparrow and he, the fiercest of the beasts soaring the sky. Barely the same species. He’s everything I’m not. The dream to my nightmare. One only needs to look at him to fall under his spell. Yes, he’ll do. He’ll rule all of Denarhelm, and all will be only too pleased to bow at his feet. They’ll crawl to him and beg to be permitted to serve. I can’t deny that the thought terrifies me. This creature could bring an end to the free will of the folk, with no more than a glance. I dare to caress the icy wall encasing him. Then I step back, startled. It feels… Alive. His pulse beating so hard I can sense it through the ice. That shouldn’t be possible, but I left the realm of possibility the moment I entered his eternal prison. He’s a myth come alive. A painfully striking prince under a curse. I suppose that makes me the hero of the story. The brave princess who rescues him, so that he may rule and I may return to the shadows, where I belong. My story ends where his begins. I will return to the solitary woods I’ve claimed as my own, and let the kings of the world play games of war. Just as I wanted. Everything is within my grasp. So why am I hesitating?

Exclusive Excerpt:

Adam frowned as he studied the green wall in the airport restaurant. The strands of ivy had strange lines of yellow running through them, making them seem dead and lifeless. He reached out a hand and touched a leaf, then recoiled. Plastic. No wonder he didn’t like it. He pulled out some bills to pay for his coffee and got to his feet. A few weeks ago, he didn’t even know what a green wall was, yet now every time he saw one, all he could think of was Laney, her mouth pursed in concentration as she’d woven leaves and branches into the large metal frame. And she could use a chainsaw. So hot. He walked through the busy terminal to catch his flight. He’d ended up having to stay two nights in New York and spent most of the time wishing he was back in St. Clair. At least they’d raised double the money from last year’s event, and soon he’d be boarding his flight. Eight hours later, Adam pulled his rental car up to the Belles and climbed out. The St. Clair breeze was fresh and warm and loosened the knots in his shoulders. All he wanted to do was wrap himself around Laney, drinking in her warmth. He’d called her from the airport, but it had gone straight to her messages. He paused and frowned. They didn’t usually catch up until after six, but it had been two days. Besides, it must be six o’clock somewhere in the world. The closed sign hung on the door, but she’d given him a key last week. He climbed the stairs two at a time and reached the top as she walked past holding a tray of hot drinks. Her hair was pulled back off her face and hung over one shoulder, leaving her neck exposed. Heat seared through him, and he went to cross the threshold. Then she turned, and her entire body froze, knuckles turning white as she gripped the tray. Her mouth had taken on a horrified shape, as if he’d just walked across an entire garden bed of flowers. Adam stiffened in response. Not quite the homecoming he’d been expecting. “Where did you say the other jar of olives was?” a voice called out from somewhere in the apartment. Jessica? Oh, hell. His rising heat faded as Laney’s eyes locked with his, her gaze pleading. Begging him to stay hidden. “Don’t tell her. She’s already finished one jar today,” Brett’s voice chimed in from somewhere in the room. Laney’s hands shook as the color drained from her face, and Adam numbly took a step back down the stairs. Some of the tension in her jaw lessened, and she gave him a pained smile before hurrying into the other room, where her guests were obviously waiting. A dismissal. He rubbed his jaw as steel spikes jabbed at his gut. Had he been imagining that this thing they had was more than just a fling? Had he spent the last two days wanting to be with someone who didn’t want to be with him? A familiar wave of humiliation and anger swept through him. What I want doesn’t seem to matter. The sound of their laughing voices chased him as he stalked back to his own apartment. Nothing like a reality check to remind him that, despite how well everything seemed to be going, Simon was still there. I’m competing with a ghost. That was why she hadn’t told anyone about their previous relationship. Why she didn’t want anyone to know about this one. His legs twitched, and he considered going for a jog, but to do so he’d have to leave the apartment and risk bumping into Laney and her in-laws again. Risk seeing the horror in her eyes at almost having her secret exposed. Beer was the next best thing. He grabbed a can from the fridge.

Book Blurb:

Life was roses. I was happy. I had my dream job. I’d finally fallen in love with the man who’d been waiting for me since he was a boy. Soon his four years in the Army would be over, and we’d be together forever. My perfect life was squarely in my palm. And then it was snatched from me. The harshest, cruelest truth became my reality. And I turned into a shell of my former self. Then a stranger arrived, wearing Army fatigues and closely cropped dark hair. Fulfilling a promise to his comrade-in-arms brought him to my front door. And the focus of his promise, it turned out, was me. His mission was simple: Care for me. Heal me. Bring me back to life. But what started out as an uncomplicated mission is quickly turning personal. He came here to take care of me. But neither of us expected how much he’d need me, too. And we definitely didn’t expect these feelings. My broken heart knows how wrong it is. We’ll fight it, harder than we’ve ever fought anything. But I’m afraid to win, and I’m even more terrified to lose. Of all his missions, I may be his most dangerous.

Would you dare to defy destiny? Are our destinies written in stone? Do we become nothing more than the self-fulfilling prophesies of other people’s opinions? Or can we dare to become who we believe we were born to be?

“A gorgeous, heartfelt journey of redemption and love” (Wendy Higgins), ONLY A BREATH APART is a young adult contemporary novel from critically acclaimed Katie McGarry. “Haunting, authentic, and ultimately hopeful” (Tammara Webber), order your copy of ONLY A BREATH APART now!

About ONLY A BREATH APART:

They say your destiny is carved in stone. But some destinies are meant to be broken.

The only curse Jesse Lachlin believes in is his grandmother’s will: in order to inherit his family farm he must win the approval of his childhood best friend, the girl he froze out his freshman year.

A fortuneteller tells Scarlett she’s psychic, but what is real is Scarlett’s father’s controlling attitude and the dark secrets at home. She may be able to escape, but only if she can rely on the one boy who broke her heart.

Each midnight meeting pushes Jesse and Scarlett to confront their secrets and their feelings, but as love blooms, the curse rears its ugly head…

Excerpt:

~JESSE~

“So you’re the decision maker now?”

He waits too many beats before speaking or maybe not enough. “I took on this role because, believe it or not, I care. I won’t pretend to understand the pain you’ve gone through, and I won’t pretend to understand your connection to this land. I’ve watched you grow up. I know, for you, this farm is like a Band-Aid on cuts that won’t stop bleeding.”

If that was meant to make me feel better, it didn’t. “You’ll never vote for me. You’re biased.”

“I’m not biased.”

For days I’ve been a stick under pressure, being bent too far. Finally, I snap. “I know you told Gran not to take me in after Mom died and to put me in foster care. You told her I was too broken and couldn’t be fixed. I know because I heard you. Tell me now you’re not biased.”

Guilt flashes over his face, and he tries to hide it as he flips through the folder in his hands. “If it helps, that’s why your grandmother set up the tribunal and chose two other people to help make the decision. Majority vote will win, and she believed you’ll rise to the challenge.”

I’m not sure if I respect him or hate him for not denying what we both know is true regarding the foster care. I’m also not sure how I feel that he doesn’t apologize either.

“She chose people who will give you a fair shake,” he continues. “This isn’t a death sentence. It’s a wakeup call. It’s August, and you have until May to prove you’re responsible. You have time. Take it. Prove me wrong.”

A growing sense of purpose takes root within me, and I do my best to funnel my anger and grief into it. “Who, besides you, is on the tribunal?”

If I tell you then I run the risk of you putting on a show for those people. This is your chance to change for the better. Take advantage of it.” Marshall leaves the paperwork on the antique table, shoves his folder back in his leather bag, and stands. “If it’s any consolation, I want you to succeed, but I want you to truly succeed. I won’t vote for you to keep the land unless you show me you understand what it means to run a farm of this magnitude.”

It’s no consolation. That’s him attempting to ease his guilt for when he votes against me.

“I’m sorry for your loss, Jesse. If you need to talk or if you’d like to stop by for a meal, you’re welcome at my house. And if you get tired of being here alone, you can live with us. We have plenty of room.”

I don’t believe any of that, but I nod because doing so will get him out of my home faster. Marshall stares at me for a few more seconds, as if contemplating saying more, but he doesn’t. Instead he walks out, shutting the door behind him.

His engine purrs to life and rocks crack under his moving tires. Then there’s silence. Maddening silence. I drop into Gran’s recliner, lower my head into my hands and close my eyes. I’ve lost Gran, and now I could lose my land. The only thing left that I love. The only thing in my life that brings me peace. “Why, Gran?”

I strain to listen in the silence, and my gut twists that there’s no response. “I miss you.”

Still no response and my head begins to throb. My cell in my back pocket vibrates. I dig it out, expecting to see a text from one of my friends, but I pop my neck to the right at the sight of Glory’s name. You need to stop by tomorrow night.

Me: No

Glory: I know of your grandmother’s plan

Me: So do I

Glory: But I know who the people are who will be deciding your future.

Me—stone cold frozen.

Glory: Stop by tomorrow at nine. I should be wrapping up my last session then.

Me: I won’t be there.

Glory: Yes, you will.

Review:

I am going to do my best to only give you a GLIMPSE of how much I loved this story without giving anything away.

I am not one to normally cry at books. I barely shed a tear while other readers can be bawling their eyes out. I’m here to say that this book caused me to cry like a hungry, angry baby. This gutted me in the best way possible. BUT! With that being said, this was not an easy book to get through. There are parts that are gut wrenching, heart shattering, terribly difficult to read. There are some trigger warnings I feel I need to mentioned: abuse – physical, emotional, psychological, and mental. I don’t want to be heartless when I say these topics do take place every day but… they do. I am a domestic abuse survivor and as one, the way McGarry portrayed them felt real and believable. That blew me away.

This was a powerful, gritty, raw, and gutting story. I also feel this type of story is necessary. As mentioned, there are very tough topics covered but I feel they need to be covered. I believe the topic of abuse (no matter what form) isn’t discussed nearly enough. While it is a very sensitive subject for me, I feel if it is talked about more that maybe more people will understand they do not have to endure torture like that. Maybe if this helps just one person get the help they deserve, it will be worth it.

I’ll get off of my soap box now.

I will briefly say how much I loved the characters. I wanted nothing more than to embrace them in a hug and whisper how much everything will work out. I wanted to remind them over and over that nothing was their fault and they did not deserve anything that happened to them. I was blown away by their amazing character development and how they still felt real the entire time. They were deeply flawed and wonderfully complex.

The overall story itself was perfect. I thought I read somewhere that someone categorized this as “Magical Realism” and I’m happy I never read that – thank goodness. I do not jive well with magical realism books. Instead, there are spiritual elements references, but that was in line with fortune telling, palm reading, and tarot cards. It certainly did not over-shadow any part of the story.

Long ramble short – this book was everything I wanted. It was heart felt, cry inducing, gut wrenching, and utterly breath taking. I needed this book and I wasn’t even aware that I needed it. Please give this a chance. I feel this may be one of McGarry’s best works to date.
