On a floating junkyard beneath a radiation sky, a deadly secret lies buried in the scrap.

Eve isn’t looking for secrets—she’s too busy looking over her shoulder. The robot gladiator she’s just spent six months building has been reduced to a smoking wreck, and the only thing keeping her Grandpa from the grave was the fistful of credits she just lost to the bookies. To top it off, she’s discovered she can destroy electronics with the power of her mind, and the puritanical Brotherhood are building a coffin her size. If she’s ever had a worse day, Eve can’t remember it.

But when Eve discovers the ruins of an android boy named Ezekiel in the scrap pile she calls home, her entire world comes crashing down. With her best friend Lemon Fresh and her robotic conscience, Cricket, in tow, she and Ezekiel will trek across deserts of irradiated glass, infiltrate towering megacities and scour the graveyard of humanity’s greatest folly to save the ones Eve loves, and learn the dark secrets of her past.

Even if those secrets were better off staying buried.

Review:

How does one properly review such a bad ass book from an even more bad ass author? The struggle is oh so real, folks. This was a whirlwind of a scifi thriller that tugged at my MadMax feels.

You already know the short recap so I won’t attempt another one, as I would fail miserably at trying to do justice.

Eve is such a relateable character that I couldn’t get enough of her. She was doing what she needed to do to get by with no apologizes for how she lived her life. She was a damn good robot fighter in a time and place when most females would cower away, she stood tall. She really was trying to do the best with the hand that life gave her, which was not a great hand at all. She is able to keep trucking with her bestest friends by her side – Lemon Fresh and Cricket. (If the names alone don’t make you want to read this story even more, I might not be able to help you. You might need help.) Lemon’s character was also so much fun to read. I wanted to be friends with her in real life. Her snark was stuff dreams are made of. I was constantly laughing at her quips! Cricket was just all around amazing. Makes me wish I had a small robot to talk sense into me. And speaking of wishing, I want a blitzhound STAT. Once you read the book – you’ll get what I’m talking about.

Writing reviews with no spoilers is TOUGH. I want to go into more detail about I can’t! Just know the world building was a-freaking-mazing and the pacing was stellar. I felt the story was over too quickly but that is simply because I was so engrossed that I couldn’t put the book down. Nah, I didn’t want to put the book down (that’s more like the truth). I could not get enough of these characters, this world, this story. It is going to feel like eternity for the next book in the series. But know that I’m already camped out at the front of the line for book 2.

I hope you are excited about this book and have it on your TBR! Once you read it – of if you have already read it – come back and let me know your thoughts. I need someone to fangirl with.2950337_orig

Review: Obsidio (Illuminae Files #3)

Obsidio (The Illuminae Files, #3)

Guys… GUYS. HOW DO I REVIEW THIS BOOK?!

“It was amazing, epic (I never use that word), brilliant, marvelous, and it destroyed my feels beyond the point where they can be saved!” Nah. Too generic for me.

Who doesn’t already feel that way about this series or about the last book in the series that changed the game in YA sci-fi??  I know I was over the moon to find a store that was selling finished copies almost two weeks before release date, yet at the same time I was hella nervous to finish this series. It is such a perfectly flawed series that I felt like I may never be the same again.

You already know the back story. It started with Kady and Ezra fighting for their lives against a corrupt AI (AIDAN). Then it was Hanna and Nik trying to survive against damning odds. Now you are going to read about Asha and Rhys. Ex-lovers who thought they lost each other forever (though never stopped caring) and now have to learn to trust each other again in order to make it off of the planet Kerenza before all hell breaks loose. Can Asha trust her ex, who happens to work for BeiTech? Can Rhys prove to Asha he is the same person who is just trying to do what is right?

I’m going to tell you right now, whatever you think you know about this story, whatever you think might happen, you are not prepared. Kaufman and Kristoff will not hold anything back and they will not shy away. These two badass mfers will make you scream, cause you to cry, give you goose flesh, you will slam the book shut and walk away because you just “literally cannot even”, and they will do with while sipping on the tears of their readers grinning like the cat that ate the canary. They know exactly how to drive that knife in a little deeper to make you feel more. These two are a force to be reckoned with and there is a reason for that. This series is printed proof how masterful they are at their craft.

I’m not sure how much I can say about this book without giving anything away. I read the printed version so that is what I will try to review. I feel to get the true grasp of the story, the printed is the way to read it the first time through simply for the artwork and boatload of extras thrown in. The second time through (because of course you read this series multiple times) you listen to the audio because the full cast will blow your mind. The characters were perfectly flawed and beautifully complex. I loved Asha and Rhys, but my heart always stays with Kady, Ezra, and of course, AIDAN. They way every character tied into this story showed just how much Kaufman and Kristoff worked to create the total package. Every single thing had its place and every single person played a role. Yes, even AIDAN. I have to admit, AIDAN is the one character (is he considered a “character”?) that took my breath away. I read his voice with so much more depth than I have before and he now has a special place in my heart.

There is no world building here.. there is universe building and it was done right. I often felt as if I was on Kerenza with Asha and Rhys. I could have sworn I could smell the building debris in the air and wipe the dust off of my jacket. The pacing was top notch stuff, never a dull moment. Even when there was no fighting going on, there was something going on. Someone was revealing their cards, or a subtle event took place that would change the course of everyone’s outcome. Brilliant. Personally I thought it was over too soon, but that is because of how much I loved this book/series/universe.

I have zero doubts you already have this book or it is on your wish list/TBR or that you borrowed it from someone. I wish I could buy everyone a copy to have because 1) it is a stunning cover and 2) everyone needs this story in their life. They need these characters, this world, this struggle of good vs evil. This felt like a story to remind everyone that the good guys will always fight no matter what. If you have read this story, let me know your thoughts. I’d love someone to gush with.

It certainly filled the Battlestar Galactica-shaped hole in my heart.- –Victoria Aveyard, bestselling author of The Red Queen

Read the New York Times bestselling blockbuster that critics are calling -out-of-this-world awesome.- The first in an epic sci-fi series unlike anything else out there.

Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the worst thing she’d ever been through. That was before her planet was invaded. Now, with enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra are forced to fight their way onto one of the evacuating craft, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But the warship could be the least of their problems. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet’s AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their biggest threat; and nobody in charge will say what’s really going on. As Kady plunges into a web of data hacking to get to the truth, it’s clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: Ezra.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents–including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more–Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

Brace yourself, because you’re about to be immersed in a mindscape that you’ll never want to leave.- –Marie Lu, author of the bestselling Legend series

My Original Review:

https://agingerlyreview.wordpress.com/2016/06/21/review-illuminae/

How does one properly review this KICK ASS book? HOW?

Let me make this brief: The illegal Kerenza colony is attached by BeiTech and two teens, Kady and Ezra, find themselves in serious danger while fighting to stay alive. They are aboard a spaceship that is supposed to take them to safety, but they end up trying to outrun the Lincoln, a BeiTech spaceship that is clearly set on destroying them. As if that wasn’t enough, the main ship’s AI system becomes damaged and becomes… deranged. Crazy, if you will. But just to add a cherry to the top of this sundae, while trying to outrun an enemy space ship and outwit the current ship’s crazy AI system, there is a deadly plague aboard the ship that threatens to whip out all human life. No pressure, right?

THIS. BOOK. This book blew my freaking mind. GONE. *POOF* It is a 600 page book that I tore through in no time. It is so action packed and suspenseful that you cannot put it down. It is told in such a unique way that the reader (YOU) have to keep going. It is told through emails, chat logs, memos, transcripted video surveillance, official debreifs, and more. It is so completely originally told that it actually makes the story better. (PSSST: there are even sections told from the AI’s POV!)

I cannot even start to talk about development of characters because Ezra and Kady simply do what needs to be done. They are two kickass, badass characters that bite the bullet and throw themselves totally in harm’s way to try to save everyone. It does not take long to get to know the characters when the book starts and soon you feel as if you are on the ship with them. You truly feel as if you are taking the journey with these two and it is mind blowing. So many twists and turns that will keep you guessing!

The way the pages are presented are what helps set this book apart from the rest of sci-fi books. As I mentioned, most of the story is told from files, emails, IMs, etc. But some of the pages are maps of pilot’s flight journeys, or pictures written in ASCII (google that if you don’t know what it is… it’s so cool!), or text looped over the pages to represent when the AI was talking. My words are not doing this justice but I hope you can sense the passion I trying to express. It is amazing beyond what I am able to properly convey.

I do not believe there are enough descriptive and good words in the English language to properly describe how much I loved this book (or maybe I lack the right words). This book is so full of everything unique, awesome, and edgy that when you finish, you sit the book down and let out a single whisper: “wow”. The authors took a risk with this book and it paid off a million times over because it was done perfectly. All of the stars in the sky are given to this book because it is amazing and everything else positive that I am not able to say.
