Synopsis (GR):

Sky in the Deep_cover imageSeventeen-year-old Eelyn’s world is war. Raised to fight alongside her Aska clansmen in a generations-old blood feud against the Riki, her life is brutal but simple: fight and survive. Until the day she sees the impossible on the battlefield—her brother, fighting with the enemy—the brother she watched die five years ago.

Faced with her brother’s betrayal, she must survive the winter in the mountains with the Riki if she wants to make it back to the fjord after the thaw. But when she begins to see herself in the people she’s been taught to hate, the world Eelyn once knew begins to crumble. And after the village is raided by a ruthless clan many believe to be a myth, Eelyn is given no choice but to trust Fiske, her brother’s friend who has tried more than once to kill her. Together, they must end the blood feud between their clans or watch their people be slaughtered.

A lush, Viking-age inspired fantasy about loyalty, forgiveness, and the definition of family.

Review:

This book did not mess around. If you want action – if you want adventure – if you want non-stop – you need to pick up this book. Young did not disappoint. You find out from the start that Eelyn is one tough mamba-jamma that is not to be messed with. She can handle herself and there is never a question of that. Her character is the true definition of the word FIERCE.

When I started this, I will admit I was hesitant because a YA version of a Viking story might come across a little weak or fluffy but that is not the case here. Young can write one hell of a story. She pulled me in from the start and never let me go. I was immediately sucked into a fast-paced and gripping story of a protagonist that knows what she wants. It didn’t get better than this story and I don’t know how Young is going to top this other than just keep writing… forever.

I hope you all realize how much I am struggling to NOT give anything away! I just want everyone to get their hands on a copy of the gem and submerse themselves into the rich and colorful world Young created. The pages will turn so quickly and it will be over before you know it. That’s what happened to me. I could not get enough and I know everyone is going to be saying the same thing. This is one book you do NOT want to miss out on.

Synopsis (GR):

The action-packed tale of a 17-year-old warrior princess and a handsome gladiator who dared take on the Roman Republic–and gave rise to the legend of Spartacus….

Roma Victor. The Republic of Rome is on a relentless march to build an empire–an empire built on the backs of the conquered, brought back to Rome as slaves.

Attia was once destined to rule as the queen and swordmaiden of Thrace, the greatest warrior kingdom the world had seen since Sparta. Now she is a slave, given to Xanthus, the Champion of Rome, as a sign of his master’s favor. Enslaved as a child, Xanthus is the preeminent gladiator of his generation.

Against all odds, Attia and Xanthus form a tentative bond. A bond that will spark a rebellion. A rebellion that threatens to bring the Roman Republic to its end–and gives rise to the legend of Spartacus….

Review:

I am going to give another down and dirty review and really try not to give anything away. Here is the biggest thing you need to know about this book:

YOU NEED THIS BOOK.

This story is going to be hard for me to review because it was beyond words amazing. I loved everything about this story – the historical retelling, the characters, the heartbreak, the slow burn romance… all of it.

Wyk started the action rolling in the first chapter and it never stopped. I truly took my time reading this because I just did not want it to end. I wanted to stay in this world with Attia and Xanthus forever. Attia was the perfect amount of baddass, hardcore, and fragile (she had just lost her freedom after all). To read her character arc and watch her remember just who she was and what she would fight for was brilliant. Xanthus was just as spectacular. He was one of the most complex characters I have read in a while. I wanted to know everything about him. Let’s not forget Xanthus’ fellow fighters/gladiators! Those guys were a HOOT! They had me rolling with laughter the entire time! I would be lying if I said I didn’t want to be friends with them in real life.

This entire story, from start to finish, had me captivated. This was the perfect story I didn’t know I needed to read. I will never stop pushing this on people so be prepared for me to always recommend this. Also, the ending made me cry like a hungry angry baby. TEARS! I already talk to Wyk about it and thanked her for writing such a powerful story. I screamed when it was over because I wanted more. I need book 2 NOW! Please add this to your TBR if you haven’t already!

Synopsis (GR):

Catarina Agatta is a hacker. She can cripple mainframes and crash through firewalls, but that’s not what makes her special. In Cat’s world, people are implanted with technology to recode their DNA, allowing them to change their bodies in any way they want. And Cat happens to be a gene-hacking genius.

That’s no surprise, since Cat’s father is Dr. Lachlan Agatta, a legendary geneticist who may be the last hope for defeating a plague that has brought humanity to the brink of extinction. But during the outbreak, Lachlan was kidnapped by a shadowy organization called Cartaxus, leaving Cat to survive the last two years on her own.

When a Cartaxus soldier, Cole, arrives with news that her father has been killed, Cat’s instincts tell her it’s just another Cartaxus lie. But Cole also brings a message: before Lachlan died, he managed to create a vaccine, and Cole needs Cat’s help to release it and save the human race.

Now Cat must decide who she can trust: The soldier with secrets of his own? The father who made her promise to hide from Cartaxus at all costs? In a world where nature itself can be rewritten, how much can she even trust herself?

REVIEW:

HOLY SMOKES. This story freaking blew me away. Prepare yourself for one heck of a gushing and gloating review because I loved everything about this story.

Suvada did not waste time easing me into the story because the action started within the first chapter. Cat lives in a time when the infected people basically become zombies and can explode. That’s right – explode. POOF. This new post-apocalyptic world is not for the faint of heart nor for the weak stomach. In order for Cat to remain immune to this plague… well, she has to do things that even made my stomach turn but I would have done it if it meant surviving. It is also a time of corruption by corporations, there is no law but that of the strongest corporation, and the strongest stall survive.

The thing that stood out the most to me was the science woven in this story – marvelous. Suvada made me want to learn about gene hacking. Nobody has ever made me want to learn about science or gene hacking. Well done, Suvada. The way it was all explained in this story was so clever. When something was introduced, it was then explained so I would know what was going on. I never felt like I was talked down to or as if I was simple minded. It was clear and logically talked about. Plus, it was just brilliant. Everything came across in a very clear and simple way. By doing that, Suvada made this story more believable. She made me truly believe this type of future would be possible. Not that I would want it to be (unless I could be Cat…) but it felt very, very believable. It also made me very curious about how I would possibly change myself, if given the opportunity. So many possibilities! With that said, know that there are some seriously disturbing parts to this story. While I would say you need a strong stomach to read, you don’t. Go into it knowing not everything is sunshine and rainbows. Suvada does a damn fine job of telling it like it is. A post-apocalyptic world would be nothing but dog-eat-dog and a place where only the clever & strong survive.

Not only is the plot compelling, but the characters are so complex. They felt so real, as if I could be friends with them in real life (again, if this society were real and I was a cyborg-badass). Cat was such a well developed character that she constantly kept me guessing as to what her next move would be. I found myself quickly trying to solve the problems like Cat, or think about the science behind what was happen and try to guess what Cat would do. Now let’s talk about Cole… purrrrr. I know he’s the guy sent to protect Cole but he, too, was so well rounded and intricate that I wanted to know more about him. He was slow to reveal the skeletons in his closet but once they started to come out, I just wanted more. He was a fantastic character. And then put Cat and Cole together and sparks fly. WHOOOOO BABY. give me a moment to fan myself. I know some people didn’t like the romance in the story but it was such a small part of the story that I believe it added, not took away from.

Overall, I loved this book. Loved. Loved. Loved. I want more from Suvada, especially book two of this series! I am proclaiming myself a forever fan of Emily Suvada. No matter what she writes, I will read. Make sure you grab yourself a copy of this one because it is a story that you will never forget.

But when her mother suddenly abandons the family, Madi finds herself struggling to keep up with all of her commitments.

Fandom to the rescue! As her online fans band together to help, an online/offline flirtation sparks with Laurent, a French exchange student. Their internet romance—played out in the comments section of her MadLibs blog—attracts the attention of an internet troll who threatens the separation of Madi’s real and online personas. With her carefully constructed life unraveling, Madi must uncover the hacker’s identity before he can do any more damage, or risk losing the people she loves the most… Laurent included.

2950337_orig.png

Excerpt:

Madi stared at her mother, the seconds ticking by.

“You’re kidding, right?”

Around them, the sunny May afternoon continued on like nothing had happened. The spring air hummed with the rumble of lawnmowers and motor vehicles. Children laughed on the playground. A bee buzzed. Madison Nakama was oblivious to all of it. Her chest ached like the time she’d fallen off the top of the monkey bars and her body had forgotten how to breathe.

This time she’d been pushed by her mother.

“Mom,” Madi pleaded, “please tell me this is a joke.”

“No joke. I’m going.”

Madi’s eyes darted to the playground and the brick-fronted buildings behind it, seeking out her sister. Spring had arrived in upstate New York. Around the park, crabapple trees hung heavy with pink blossoms, the blue sky dotted with perfect silver clouds. Her fingers clenched, claw-like, around the cell phone in her hand. This is so bad! So freaking bad!

“It’s been in the works for a while,” her mother said, “but I got the confirmation yesterday.”

“Confirmation. Right.”

“I’m…” Her mother shifted uneasily on the bench. “I’m leaving at the end of the week.”

Madi jerked. “As in this week?!”

“Oxford has an undergrad summer course they’d like me to co-teach. It starts June 1st. I want to have the paperwork done and be settled in the apartment before—”

“You’ve gotta be kidding me!” Madi’s shock rolled into sudden anger. “This is like some— some kind of awful joke!”

Julia gave a long-suffering sigh. “For goodness sake, Madison, you’re a senior in high school, not a child, so please stop acting like one.”

“But you’re running away!”

“No one’s running anywhere.”

“Driving. Flying. Whatever!”

Madi glared at children laughing on the equipment. Over on the swing-set, her sister Sarah—looking younger than her fifteen years would suggest—swung back and forth. Her lips were pursed in focus, eyes half-closed. It was as close to a smile as Sarah ever got. The swing’s chains screeched in time to her motion. Watching her, Madi had the unsettling realization that while the pin had been pulled, the grenade had yet to go off.

But when it did…

“Look, it just sort of happened.” Julia Nakama’s voice was barely audible above the happy din of children. “And while I know this must be hard for you—”

“You know nothing about how hard it is!”

“I know what it must seem like,” her mother said, undeterred. “But Wells only approved my secondment yesterday. And as soon as your father and I talked about the move I—”

“Dad knew about this?!”

Squeak… squeak…

Her mother leaned closer. “I understand you’re upset about this, but please lower your voice or—”

“Or what? You’ll leave?”

“Madi, please.”

Squeak… squeak…

Madi stared at her sister, willing her angry tears to disappear. This couldn’t be happening to them. Not now! Not when Sarah was finally settled into a good routine.

“I know this is hard to hear,” her mother said. “But opportunities like this don’t come along every day. When you’re older and you’re building your own career, you’ll understand.” Squeak… squeak… “Madi, are you even listening to me?”

She spun. “Listening to what? You’re leaving!” Her eyes narrowed. “Again.

Her mother’s smile faded into frosty annoyance. “Calm down. People are staring at us.”

Squeak… squeak…

“Calm down?! How am I supposed to ‘calm down’ when you’re taking off?!” Madi’s voice grew shrill and she stumbled to her feet. A nearby mother turned in surprise. “You said you wouldn’t do that! You promised us—you promised Sarah! And now you’re doing it all over again!”

“Madison, please!” Her mother’s fingers clamped around her wrist and she tugged her back down to the park bench. She smiled apologetically at the onlookers, shrugging as if to say: Sorry about this. My teen’s just being a teen. You know how it is. Madi could almost hear the laughter.

Squeak… The repetitive pattern slowed and Madi caught her sister’s eyes across the playground. Squeak… Sarah frowned. Squeak… Madi looked away.

“You need to keep your voice down.”

Madi jerked her hand back and crossed her arms. “Yeah, well, you need to keep your promises.”

Julia sighed. “You’ll understand when you’re older. Families and careers are never easy to balance—” Her voice faltered. “Especially with our challenges. But I can’t keep putting this off. Teaching at Oxford is an opportunity I’ll never get again.” She stood from the bench, brushing invisible crumbs from her slacks. “Now get your sister. We need to leave.”

Madi grabbed her pack and stood. “Why don’t you get her yourself since you’re so certain about everything?”

A nearby woman gasped. Julia’s face drained of color. She stepped in front of Madi, blocking her from onlookers.

“We’ll talk later. Go get Sarah.”

Madi lifted her chin. “No.”

Her mother let out a hissing breath as her fingers snaked around her daughter’s wrist. “Now I don’t know what you think you’re playing at, Madison, but you will go get your sister or—”

“Why is Mom hurting your arm, Madi?” a voice asked.

Julia released her daughter and stumbled back. Sarah stood behind them, watching with that unwavering gaze she always had.

“I-I’m not.”

“Yes, you were. I saw you,” Sarah announced. “You were talking to Madi, and then Madi started frowning, and she yelled at you, and then you yelled at her, and then you grabbed her arm and—”

“I’ll be in the car! Hurry up girls. We’re already late.” Julia bolted away, dodging wayward children. She didn’t look back.

Madi threw her arms around Sarah, hugging her younger sister. Sarah tolerated it for the count of three, then began to squirm.

“Thanks for saving me,” Madi said as she released her.

Sarah didn’t smile. (She rarely did.) “Why is Mom mad at you?”

“She isn’t.”

“Yes, she is.” Sarah spoke with certainty.

“No.”

“I saw her, Madi. You were talking, and then you started frowning and—”

“I dunno, Sarah. Mom’s just—” Madi’s shoulders slumped. It wasn’t in her heart to tell her sister the truth: Everything in their lives had just changed yet again and Sarah would be the one to suffer for it. Instead, she forced a brave smile. “Mom was just ready to go. She asked me to get you, and I said no.”

Her sister seemed to consider that for a moment, and Madi wondered if she’d now have to explain why she’d refused to get her. Questions, with Sarah, continued until she was satisfied. It was part of the reason she was so gifted academically.

“Okay then,” Sarah looked up the street where their mother had disappeared. “So Mom’s ready to go home?”

“Yeah. You ready to leave?”

“Uh-huh,” she said, and looked back at the swing. “It was a good day.”

Madi didn’t answer. Couldn’t. In seconds, Sarah was down the street, leaving her to follow. Madi glanced down at her phone, forgotten in her hand. In the last stressful minutes a new post had appeared on her dashboard. Her throat ached as she read it.

internet famous

With a sigh, Madi hit ‘reblog’.

This was the worst possible day in a long string of them, and her sister, Sarah, didn’t know the half of it.

Goodreads Link:

https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22537367-summer-of-sloane

Synopsis (GR):

Warm Hawaiian sun. Lazy beach days. Flirty texts with her boyfriend back in Seattle.

These are the things seventeen-year-old Sloane McIntyre pictured when she imagined the summer she’d be spending at her mom’s home in Hawaii with her twin brother, Penn. Instead, after learning an unthinkable secret about her boyfriend, Tyler, and best friend, Mick, all she has is a fractured hand and a completely shattered heart.

Once she arrives in Honolulu, though, Sloane hopes that Hawaii might just be the escape she needs. With beach bonfires, old friends, exotic food, and the wonders of a waterproof cast, there’s no reason Sloane shouldn’t enjoy her summer. And when she meets Finn McAllister, the handsome son of a hotel magnate who doesn’t always play by the rules, she knows he’s the perfect distraction from everything that’s so wrong back home.

But it turns out a measly ocean isn’t nearly enough to stop all the emails, texts, and voicemails from her ex-boyfriend and ex-best friend, desperate to explain away their betrayal. And as her casual connection with Finn grows deeper, Sloane’s carefree summer might not be as easy to find as she’d hoped. Weighing years of history with Mick and Tyler against their deception, and the delicate possibility of new love, Sloane must decide when to forgive, and when to live for herself.

Review

I am happy to say that this book pleasantly surprised me! This was fun and quick read. I finished in just under two days. I can promise that this book will make you wish for warmer weather, the beaches of Hawaii, and hot beachy boys once you are done.

This is the story of Sloane, a soon to be High School senior, that just had her life turned upside down by her best friend and boyfriend. She is given some truly devastating news: her best friend and boyfriend slept together behind her back. The level of betrayal Sloane feels is beyond words.  In hopes of trying to figure things out, Sloane and her twin brother Penn travel to Hawaii to spend the summer with their mother. Right before they get on the plane, Sloane leaves her boyfriend with an impressive right hook that breaks his nose in several places and breaks her wrist. She does not let the new cast slow her down once she arrive in Hawaii. She immediately falls back into old routines of hanging out with amazing friends, her truly awesome mom & step dad, and even getting back in the water. Sloane ends up crossing paths with the very handsome son of the hotel owner, Finn. Things between Sloane and Finn heat up fast. No matter what happens, Sloane is constantly pulled back to her past and what transpired before she boarded the plane. Sloane is not the only one who has dark secrets – Finn has secrets of his own that will come to light.

I was immediately pulled into Sloane’s world and fell in love with Erin Schneider’s writing. This was a quick read, yes, but it also deals with series topics. Sloane is a very strong MC and I appreciate that. The struggle Sloane had trying to cut ties to her life outside of Hawaii really hit home with me. The news Sloane received before she left for the summer is something that isn’t easily brushed under the rug. This story was the perfect balance of serious topics and light beachy reading.

Let’s talk for a moment about the supporting characters. They were so all wonderful and necessary and they felt so real. They had flaws like everyone else, but they also jumped quickly to the wrong conclusions and were too quick to judge without knowing the facts. Anyone else guilty of that? Yeah, me too. That’s what made them so good. I found myself invested in what happened to all of them.

This book has more depth than I think people are giving it credit for. It cannot be easy for an author to take a rather serious topic and give it a somewhat airy, light spin and drop knowledge without the reader realizing it. But take caution when starting this story, it truly is unputdownable. You have been warned.

Goodreads Link: Liars and Losers Like Us

Synopsis (GR):

Keep calm and make it to prom night—without a legit panic attack.

For seventeen-year-old Bree Hughes, it’s easier said than done when gossip, grief, and the opportunity to fail at love are practically high-fiving her in the hallways of Belmont High.

When Bree’s crush, Sean Mills, gives her his phone number, she can’t even leave a voicemail without sounding like a freak. Then she’s asked to be on Prom Court because Maisey Morgan, the school outcast nominated as a joke, declined. She apologizes to Maisey, but it’s too late. After years of torment and an ugly secret shared with their class’s cruel Pageant Queen, Maisey commits suicide. Bree is left with a lot of regret…and a revealing letter with a final request.

With Sean by her side, Bree navigates through her guilt, her parents’ divorce, and all the Prom Court drama. But when a cheating-love-triangle secret hits the fan after a night of sex, drinks, and video games, she’s left with new information about Sean and the class Pageant Queen. Bree must now speak up or stay silent. If she lets fear be her guide, she’ll lose her first love, and head to prom to avenge the death of the school outcast—as a party of one.

I am going to give you my five favorite quotes from the book!

“You think you’re better than me with your perfect life. You get to walk down the hallway without wondering if someone’s going to throw something, trip you, or squeak and sing when you’re with friends or walking down the hall with your little sister who only just realized you were a loser once she got into high school with you.”

“What I’m saying is that I don’t think you’re the kind of person I could have spent a long time falling in love with. It was too easy. Just a short jump.”

“Okay, what I’m trying to say is that I may not be the best choice. I couldn’t even find my shoes today.” I lift my dress and point to my foot, turning the toe of my sneaker on the stage. “So, yeah, this is really cool to be here, but I’m definitely not a Prom Queen.”

“Let’s just say that some of us try so hard pretending we’re someone we’re not, that we become evil bitches stepping over people that are trying to get through the day. And some people end up dying feeling like they’re less than human, just because we don’t care.”

“You’re ears drive me crazy. Drink up.”

February SST: Symptoms of Being Human

Welcome to February Sunday Street Team! This month’s feature author is Jeff Gordon and his new book Symptoms of Being Human!

Symptoms of Being Human

I am still trying to process my thoughts and feelings about this book. I had never heard of the term “gender fluid” before so I was very curious to read a story about it. I wanted to understand and see if I could understand more about the term so that is why I was very happy to pick up Symptoms of Being Human.

I probably should have braced myself better for this book. This is the beautiful and honest story of Riley, who happens to identify with both male and female genders. That means Riley could dress as a boy one day, and a girl the next. Riley struggles every single day with being judged by society. Riley also has a difficult time coming out to his/her parents. I say it like that because the author never tells you Riley’s actual gender and that is because it is not the point of the story. This is a story about society labeling everyone and being forced to live within those labels.

Ultimately, I learned a lot from this book. Reading about how stressful life is (or could be) for a gender fluid person, how to accept yourself and for your friends/family/society to accept you as well. There is also fear, depression, and anxiety involved. This story has Riley going through some extremely difficult situations, some that made me slightly uncomfortable.

Make no mistake, this story is incredibly well written and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I was so engrossed in what Riley was going through that I finished this book in one day. There is one thing that bothered me about this book – the fact that Riley never actually said anything, good or bad. Riley was always moments away from “coming out” but never quite did. That bothered me but it did not make me stop the book. I truly enjoyed reading this story and am very glad that I did. This was a four star read for me. I recommend everyone add it to their TBR list right now and read it as quickly as they can.
